STORIES OF HOPE
A SINGLE MOM’S STORY
After weeks of appointments with a pediatrician and being told that her son had “a cold,” a mother was forced to admit her five-month-old son into the ICU with acute respiratory distress. This single mother, who has an older daughter as well, also suffers from health-related issues of her own.
While in ICU, her son is diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML), which will require a five-to-six-month stay at the hospital for multiple cycles of intensive chemotherapy treatments.
As a single parent with a child in the hospital and a special-needs daughter at home, she is no longer able to work. Not only was her son in the hospital for six months, he was also transferred back to ICU multiple times during that time for complications.
While there is no easy fix for such a difficult and painful situation, this mother and her family did receive financial assistance for food, public transportation, rent, utilities and furniture, which proved extremely beneficial.
